Question by Daniel H: How do I get an internship lined up a year ahead of time?
I am a freshman starting this summer, and have not yet accumulated a GPA. I would like to arrange everything well ahead of time to ensure an opening. I am in a community college and will be transfering to MSU Northern for fall and spring to get a few programming classes done and get a little into the computer side of my desired Electrical Engineering degree which will be attained the following spring, for various reasons, at MSU Bozeman. Next summer I would like to get into an internship with microsoft. Upon contact they have asked me for a resume. I have been almost entirely self employed for the last 7 years so a resume without my schooling is bleak at best. Any advice on how to go about this?
Due to the first answer I will add some more info about Microsoft. Their internship programs are very liberal even accepting those with no college education for the sake of “forming them”. They just want people with a mind for the industry. That does not mean that a person just out of high school who is lacking any real computer knowledge will get an advanced position in the company but it does allow for those seeking a degree to gain some hands on experience in the field that they partake in. They do specify that you must stay in the area you are placed/choose for the 12+ weeks. I just want to ensure that my knowledge is complimentary to the microsoft team before I go in. I hope that this clears things up a bit.

Why are you seeking an Internship so far in advanced?
I think you will come up against some resistance when seeking one so far in advance. You having no relevant work history or credits in a particular field people may wonder if you would be a good candidate vs someone who may be close to graduating. You would really have to sell yourself. Also keep in mind the people who your trying to hook up with are very busy and don’t want to keep up with your information for a year. In my experience companies that are allowing internships are often looking to mold someone that they can also hire soon thereafter. Good Luck
