Question by Costmo: Driving across montana northern idaho and washington in the middle of december?
I am in bozeman, MT and the plan is for me to drive from bozeman to southern oregon december 16 or 17. I am experienced driving on snow and i have a fairly heavy vehicle (2009 subaru outback) with studded tires. I am not so concerned with whether this trip is safe to make because i think i will be fine. So my question is, what are the chances that roads will be closed? If you think they will be closed another route suggestion is also appreciated. Thanks.

On I-90, You have two major mountain passes (Lookout & 4th of July) between Bozeman and Washington State You can avoid the rest of the mountains if you follow US 395 South from Spokane to I-84 in Oregon, and then on to Portland, OR.
It’s unlikely that you’ll have any serious problems with snow in December, but keep an eye on the weather and be prepared to stop for a day or two along the way in case something unusual pops up.
