Question by Bob R: What do people stock up on food wise?
Okay, I’m a bachelor and have been cooking the same meals for myself since 5 years ago. But the food only lasts a week. I recently visited Montana up in Bozeman, and this local says right before Winter, people in that area buy food for 6 months (because the roads aren’t plowed, they just close them down). What do they buy that lasts them 6 months?

Chicken

Frozen Vegetables (onions included)

You can stock up on canned soups

Canned vegetables

Canned fruit

Pasta, noodles

In a pinch you can even freeze milk and bread and thaw later.

Probablt tons of pasta and meat, I mean you can really freeze most anything for that long and it will be okay to cook. I dont know about freezing milk but it might be possible. Meats like chicken han, hamburger, bacon, fish, steak……that can all be frozen for long periods of time, butter lasts quite a bit, you can also freeeze that too. Im sure they stash up on some veggies and what not too and make stews and soups with the meat and broth. They probably bake a lot too, like biscuits, or use mix to make pancakes and syrup in the morning.

Everything and anything besides fresh produce. They even make shelf-stable milk now. Or they buy powdered milk. They usually have large deep freezers to hold meats and other items. Canned things, dried things, rice, boxed things, even cheese and bread can be frozen. I’ve had to do this myself when I lived in a rural area with no car. Coffee, tea, booze, sodas all keep well until refrigerated. They also (at least I did) learned how to make more foods for myself like my own tortillas and bread. It also made me more creative in the kitchen, trying to use up what I had instead of just going to the store.
